How window treatments can boost home security.

Window treatments play a bunch of different roles. From heat control to the perfect decorative finish and… (Probably something that wasn’t the first thing that came to mind) … Home security. No, we’re not talking bars outside the window (although in some cases, such as basement or ground floor-level apartments in repurposed industrial buildings, such a feature can look great!). We’re talking about treatments like security shutters, privacy window coverings, and other deterrents against unwanted prying eyes.

Less of a View… Less of a Temptation

The right window treatments not only stop potential wrongdoers from getting a free sneak peek inside, but they also create an illusion of occupancy. Yep, today’s smart tech isn’t just about convenience, it’s also an effective intrusion deterrent. Virtually every type of window treatment can be given an automated upgrade—and pre-existing ones can often be retrofitted. Curtains, drapes, blinds, shutters… Adding motorization means they can be operated via a remote control, smartphone app, voice control, or pre-programmed to deploy at your chosen times of day.

Choosing the Right Window Treatments for Home Security

Window furniture is a crucial element of interior décor. Getting the right combination of aesthetics and security is something that’s best done in tandem with a professional designer and fitter. Naturally, you want each room’s window dressings to enhance the theme of the space. This will be driven by your vision, vibe, and personal preference. Maybe you love (or hate!) drapes. Perhaps the clean lines of shutters fit with your lifestyle, or the classic look of Roman blinds is the way to go.

Whichever style of window treatments you go for, a custom fit is an essential element of adding that extra layer of home security. The last thing you need is weak points (AKA, gaps) which a potential bad actor could exploit.

A Word about Security Shutters

Security shutters are wonderful privacy window coverings. Gone are the days when these looked as ugly as the name suggests—today’s cutting-edge options can integrate beautifully with virtually every style of decoration. Interior or exterior shutters are one of the optimal ways to incorporate customizable privacy to your windows. Team them with other security devices, such as CCTV, smart cameras, and an integrated house alarm system for the ultimate home fortification.

You can even add pre-emptive window treatment deployment to a security system. If any suspicious activity is detected, shutters and blinds can be programmed to close automatically. For the opportunistic burglar (which most robberies are), this would be more than enough to have them scurrying away to find an easier property to target.

And There are Some Other Surprising Advantages as Well…

Adding window treatments that boost home security brings other benefits too, such as:

Reducing home insurance

Many companies offer policy reductions when security measures are in place. This isn’t just about preventing burglaries, you might also get a lower premium if you have window treatments that guard against damage, such as storm shutters if you live in a hurricane-prone region.

Increases the value and appeal of your home

Fitted, home security window treatments have a very positive impact on how much your home is worth. If you’re thinking of selling, then such features will be very attractive to buyers.

Peace of mind

You can’t put a price on this. Feeling safe within your property is something everyone deserves and knowing you have that extra layer of security is something that can’t be overstated.
