Are window shutters energy-efficient?

With growing awareness as to how our personal choices impact the environment, it makes perfect sense to consider this when carrying out home improvements. Regarding window treatments, you may well have heard about the energy-efficient benefits of window and plantation shutters. But what’s true and what’s fake news? The following debunks the myths around the energy-efficient window shutters, helping you make an informed choice about the right dressing that suits your needs and décor.

Understanding energy efficiency ratings

What is R-value?

The energy efficiency of window shutters is measured in R-value. This determines how long it takes for heat to move from one side of the material to the other. The higher the R-value, the slower the movement of heat, and therefore the insulation effect is greater.

Typical R-values for shutters are between 3.0 – 6.0, whereas that of regular horizontal blinds is between 1.0 – 2.0, meaning that window shutters are, indeed, an energy-efficient option.

It’s important to remember that energy efficiency also refers to the ability for a window dressing to keep a house cool, as well as warm. The less you need to use your air conditioning or heating not only benefits the planet but your wallet as well.

The most energy-efficient window shutters

  • Plantation shutters
  • Other energy-efficient options

Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters aren’t only a popular choice for their elegant good looks, they’re also particularly beneficial in the energy stakes too, making this a great choice that combines pure elegance with practicality.

The material they’re made from has an impact on the level of efficiency, with each having its pros and cons.-

Faux wooden shutters

Aesthetically pleasing, these are the most energy-efficient because the makeup of either vinyl or PVC around a central air pocket creates a sturdy barrier that slows heat transference. The disadvantage is that because they’re not as rigid as other materials there’s a limit as to how large a window these shutters can cover.- Woodcore faux shutters: Also made from vinyl or PVC, these also boast a wooden core that makes for stronger construction.

The louvers still have a hollow core (albeit smaller) that insulates, but slightly less than that of their wholly faux cousins. The added element of stability makes this is a good choice for larger windows.- Composite shutters: These are completely solid, with a core of MDF and outer of hard polypropylene. Lacking the “air bubble” in the center means a further loss in insulation, but rest assured that they still effectively block heat transference.

The construction means they can be made to fit windows as large and wide as you like!- Wooden shutters: Natural wood contains tiny air pockets that provide effective insulation. Thanks to the strength of wood, these energy-efficient window shutters can be used to dress large windows in a single panel, plus wooden shutters are hardy and withstand the rigors of the elements.

Other energy-efficient options

-

Cellular shades

These are an alternative that can, according to whether they’re made from single or double cell fabric, offer an R-value, of anything before 2.0 and 5.0.-

Roller shutters

The least energy-efficient of them all (R-value of 1.3 to 1.8), this is one of the most inexpensive options that can be customized as necessary. Solar shades, blackout blinds, and light-filtering elements are just some of the choices available.- Extra insulation: An added factor that can increase the energy efficiency of window shutters is to seal any gaps around the frame. Depending on the window shape, these gaps could be small or large. Small ones can be sealed with household caulk and larger ones with wood shims (and then painted to match).
